Cal State LA’s Owen Hunt was nearly untouchable on the mound as he picked up the CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week award, for April 17-23.
Hunt threw an absolute gem on Friday at Cal State East Bay in the Golden Eagle’s only win of the series. Hunt pitched a rare nine-inning complete game where he yielded just four singles and did not allow an earned run in the team’s 4-1 win. He struck out eight without a walk.
The senior right-hander from Sacramento was perfect through four innings and retired the first 13 batters he faced. CSUEB scored an unearned run in the fifth and managed to get two baserunners on in the sixth with an error and two singles. Hunt, however, got out of the sixth inning jam and sat nine of the final 10 batters to pick up his fifth win.
Hunt’s outing proved to be extra important in the series, as LA was outscored 18-7 in the three remaining games in the series. Cal State East Bay had 23 hits in the 13-4 decision during game two of the series.
Hunt is second in the CCAA in innings pitched with 63.1 and is fourth in strikeouts with 59.
Cal State LA will host Cal State San Bernardino on Tuesday in a make-up game before hosting CCAA leader Cal State Monterey Bay this weekend.
