CCAA’s top hitter Eric Smelko of CSUDH selected as Baseball Player of the Week

Cal State Dominguez Hills offensive leader Eric Smelko has been named CCAA Baseball Player of the Week, for the week of Feb. 27-March 5.

 Smelko batted .682 and slugged .955 with a .720 on-base percentage for an impressive 1.675 OPS. He scored 11 runs and drove in seven RBIs during the Toros’ four-game series against Cal State LA and a non-conference game versus Azusa Pacific.

The junior center fielder from La Mesa got at least two hits in each of the five games and enjoyed a 5-for-5 performance in Saturday's opening game of the twinbill against CSULA, capping the weekend with a 4-for-4 performance on Sunday in which he was intentionally walked. He also went deep in the doubleheader's nightcap for his third homer of the year. Smelko, the Toro’s leadoff hitter, also scored 11 runs and drove in seven.

Smelko currently leads the CCAA in batting average (.574), slugging (.836) and on-base percentage (.639).

CSUDH (9-5, 4-0 CCAA) travels to face Cal State San Marcos this weekend.
