Cal State Monterey Bay relief pitcher Chris Tonna was untouchable in three outings, earning him this week’s CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week award.
Tonna, who appeared in three of the four games in the series against Sonoma State, retired all nine batters he faced in three innings. He did not allow a run or a hit with four strikeouts while earning two saves out of two opportunities.
The senior from Fremont first pitched a perfect seventh inning in Friday’s 13-3 rout, where he fanned two batters. Tonna then recorded two saves in both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader. In game one of the twinbill on Saturday, Tonna threw 13 pitches to get a flyout and a double-play grounder to preserve a 8-6 Otters win. In the nightcap, he struck out the first two batters faced and induced a grounder to end the 10-9 game.
Tonna now has three saves on the season and is tied for third in the CCAA.
The Otters will travel to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay this weekend.
