Cal State San Bernardino first baseman Daryl Ruiz has been named this season’s first Baseball Player of the Week after a stellar opening weekend.
The junior from Corona batted .500 with 1.000 slugging and .571 on-base percentage as he led the Yotes to three wins against Central Washington. Ruiz belted two home runs and batted in nine runs to lead the CSUSB offensive charge. He was consistent in the three-game set with two runs and three RBI in each contest. He also scored five times.
To start the year, Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a dinger in the opener on Saturday. He got the Yotes on the board with a two-run single in the first. In game two of the twinbill, Ruiz went 2-for-3 with his second homer on the day. The three-run blast came in the Yotes’ final at-bat in the walkoff 7-5 win. In Sunday’s finale, he collected two more hits, drove in three more runs and walked to help CSUSB complete the sweep.
Cal State San Bernardino will remain at home this week as the Yotes host another GNAC foe, Saint Martin’s, for a four-game series starting on Friday.
