Rhys Stevens of Cal Poly Pomona was nearly untouchable in the season opener as he was selected as CCAA Pitcher of the Week to start the 2023 season.
Stevens threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up just one hit in No. 21 Broncos’ 4-0 win over visiting UC Colorado Springs on Friday. The junior from Mission Viejo struck out eight and walked two. He worked with Caleb Reyes in the combined shutout.
Stevens retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced to start the game before allowing an infield single to begin the fifth inning. He allowed just two additional base runners via bases on balls.
Cal Poly Pomona will host another RMAC team this week when the Broncos welcome Colorado School of Mines in a four-game set beginning on Friday.
