Cal State Dominguez Hills’ Nico Martinez nearly threw a perfect game as he was selected the CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week, for the week of Feb. 12-19.
Martinez tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in the Toros’ 8-0 win over New Mexico Highlands last Friday. He was just a walk away from a perfect game. He needed just 87 pitches to record the program’s fifth no-hitter and first since 2010.
The senior right-hander from Santa Barbara retired the first 16 batters in order before issuing a 11-pitch walk in the sixth. Martinez then sat the final five batters in order, including the final two on strikes to secure the spot in the CSUDH record book. In all, Martinez struck out eight batters.
Cal State Dominguez Hills swept New Mexico Highlands in the four-game set by outscoring the Cowboys, 44-4. The Toros threw three shutouts in the series, including a 19-0 finale win on Sunday.
The Toros’s next opponent is Azusa Pacific, in Azusa, on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
