Portis, Ruvalcaba, Diaz voted D2 CCA All-Americans

Dec 6, 2023

A trio of CCAA men's soccer student-athletes can proudly call themselves All-Americans in 2023. Cal State LA's Oliver Diaz and Cal Poly Pomona's Cesar Ruvalcaba collected second team honors. Cal State LA's Andrew Portis earned third team honors, giving the Golden Eagles half of the selections from the West Region.

Oliver Diaz was the CCAA Midfielder of the Year and the CCAA Player of the Year. He scored five goals and had three assists on a Cal State LA team that won the CCAA regular season and Tournament Championships. He scored three game-winning goals, including the lone goal in both 1-0 wins over a top 10 Cal Poly Pomona team. The Hawthorne native was also selected as the D2 CCA West Region Player of the Year. Cal State LA went 33-3-6 (17-2-3 CCAA) in his two-year tenure.

The 2023 CCAA Defender of the Year, Cesar Ruvalcaba, was critical to Cal Poly Pomona's continued success. The senior was listed as a defender but played whatever role he needed to help his team succeed in that match. He finished the season with three goals and four assists. His two latest goals came in the Broncos' NCAA regional win. Ruvalcaba's efforts helped the CPP finish eighth in NCAA Div. II in goal differential (plus-34) and 13th in team goals against average (.754).

Andrew Portis also played a critical role as the central defender on one of the nation's best defensive teams. Cal State LA paced the country with a .893 save percentage and was second with a .727 shutout percentage. It allowed only .490 goals per match (fourth NCAA) and was ninth in goal differential (plus-33). The sophomore from Temecula scored the game-winning goal against Azusa Pacific, and he added an assist.

Cal State LA was one of only eight schools in the country with multiple All-America selections. It is the fifth straight season a Golden Eagle has been honored with the award, the second-longest streak in the nation (Charleston). Ruvalcaba became Cal Poly Pomona's first D2 CCA All-American since Jimmie Villalobos in 2019 and helped the CCAA earn three of the four All-America selections out of the West Region.

Midwestern State's Mere Escobar was named the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year after posting 17 goals and 13 assists. Click here for the complete 2023 D2 CCA Men's Soccer All-America Team.

The Ron Lenz National Player of the Year award was named for long-time South Dakota State sports information director Ron Lenz in 2008. Lenz was instrumental in the foundation of the NCAA Division II All-America program, which honors outstanding student-athletes across eight NCAA Division II sports.

Sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools and conferences selected the three D2CCA All-America teams. The process begins at the regional level, with all first-team all-region picks advancing to the national ballot. A total of 39 student-athletes representing 29 different institutions filled out the three teams. This is the 17th year teams have been selected since the All-America program in 2006.
