For his efforts in helping Cal State Dominguez Hills earn results against two nationally ranked teams, the Toros’ Sebastian Ascencio was voted the CCAA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25.

In a high-scoring affair against No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona, Ascencio made three stops to keep his team in the contest and give time for Michael McKibbin to find the equalizer with less than four minutes remaining in the second half. He made three saves.

Against No. 1 Cal State LA, Ascencio was flawless. He kept the Golden Eagles off the board for all 90 minutes while making two saves. His efforts helped set up Martin Velasquez’s game-winning goal in the 68th minute as No. 7 knocked No. 1 and ended Cal State LA’s 24-match unbeaten streak.

The Toros’ 7-0-2 start is their best to open a season since they won the championship in 2008.

Ascencio is ranked 43rd in the country with .842 goals against average and is tied for 33rd with three shutouts.

The senior goalkeeper is the third Toro to earn CCAA Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. He joins David Aguilera and Zane Baumgardt, who won the honor in back-to-back weeks (Sept. 5 & 12). Click here to see the complete list of CCAA weekly award winners
