Greg Siller Awards Jun 8, 2022 Chico State wins the 2021-22 Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup Chico State's athletic teams made postseason appearances in all but one sport to claim the CCAA Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup trophy for the 2021-22 season. The award was announced at the conference's annual spring Executive Council meetings and the trophy was presented to Chico State's Executive Director of Athletics Anita Barker and Faculty Athletic Representative Matt Thomas on Wednesday. The award, named in honor of former long-time Commissioner and CCAA Hall of Famer Robert J. Hiegert, is given to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the CCAA's 13 championship sports. Chico State’s men’s cross country team captured the school’s only CCAA Championship in 2021-22, but the Wildcats posted eight second-place finishes to accumulate 92.05 points. Women's cross country, women's soccer, men's basketball, men's golf, men's track & field, women's track & field, softball, and baseball all finished second in the final standings to help Chico State win the program's sixth commissioner's cup. “This is a testament to the hard work and commitment from our coaches, staff, and most importantly, our student-athletes,” said Anita Barker, Chico State’s Executive Director of Athletics. “We thank all the student-athletes that stuck with us during COVID and this season. They showed up for the Wildcats this year, and I am very proud of all of them.” The Wildcats edged Cal State San Marcos by 0.26 points for the 2021-22 Hiegert Commissioner’s Cup (91.79). The Cougars won the softball and women's basketball regular-season titles, as well as the women's golf tournament championship. The CSUSM men's basketball team picked up a bonus point for winning the tournament championship. It was the best finish for Cal State San Marcos since joining the CCAA in 2015-16. “It was an honor to be back on the field presenting the Hiegert Cup once again,” said CCAA Commissioner Mitch Cox. “The competition this season showed how much of a battle our conference is in every sport. We had eight different universities win conference championships, and you saw how close (the commissioner’s cup point total) was at the end. Teams can’t take a day off in this conference. Congratulations to the Wildcats for winning this tremendous honor.” Cal Poly Pomona made a run in the spring to reach third place in the commissioner's cup standings. The Broncos won both the men's and women's track & field championships, and the baseball team won the conference tournament to post 86.40 points. Cal State LA (74.52) and Sonoma State (71.91) completed the top 5. Cal State East Bay (66.59), Cal State San Bernardino (65.26), Stanislaus State (62.16), Cal State Monterey (53.14), San Francisco State (52.46), Cal State Dominguez Hills (50.94), and Cal Poly Humboldt (32.22) round out the 2021-22 Hiegert Commissioner's Cup standings. An institution's Hiegert Cup ranking is calculated using its top two Conference finishes in the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons and the next two highest finishes, regardless of the season. The specific number of points garnered per sport is determined by the number of institutions that sponsor the sport. 2021-22 Commissioner's Cup Standings 1 Chico State 92.05 2 Cal State San Marcos 91.79 3 Cal Poly Pomona 86.40 4 Cal State LA 74.52 5 Sonoma State 71.91 6 Cal State East Bay 66.59 7 Cal State San Bernardino 65.26 8 Stanislaus State 62.16 9 Cal State Monterey Bay 53.14 10 San Francisco State 52.46 11 Cal State Dominguez Hills 50.94 12 Cal Poly Humboldt 32.22 Past Robert J.
