Ryon Knowles named Baseball Player of the Week after leading Cal Poly Pomona to series sweep

Ryon Knowles of Cal Poly Pomona picked up the season’s final Baseball Player of the Week award after a stellar offensive performance last weekend.

Knowles batted .519 with a 1.697 OPS to help the Broncos to a four-game series sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills. The victories helped Cal Poly Pomona clinched the No. 2 seed, and a first round bye, in the upcoming CCAA Baseball Tournament.

Knowles went 9-for-17 in the series against the Toros, including two three-hit games on Friday. The first game of the Friday doubleheader was his best of the season as he went 3-for-5 with a double and two home runs. He drove in five runs and scored three times in the Broncos’ 13-7 win over the Toros.

The graduate student from Corona also went 3-for-4 in Friday’s nightcap with a triple. In all, he drove in eight runs and scored seven times with two doubles, a triple and two dingers in the series.

Defensively the second baseman had 20 chances without an error to record 13 assists and seven putouts.

Knowles, who extended his hitting streak to 21 games, is eighth in the CCAA with a .372 batting average. He’s also ninth in slugging (.567) and fourth in on base percentage (.484).

His 1.051 OPS ranks seventh best. He is also tied for second with 34 walks.

The Broncos, the No. 2 seed in the postseason tournament, will join the rest of the six-team field in Chico for CCAA Baseball Tournament, May 11-14.
