No. 3 Sonoma State used a 9-run second inning to vault the Seawolves to a 16-8 victory over the No. 6 seed Cal State East Bay in the first game of the 2022 CCAA Softball Tournament. (May 5)

Courtney Jack drove in five runs for the Seawolves, including hitting a grand slam as part of the nine-run second inning. In the third, Cassidy Romano added a three-run homer and finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. She was one of six Sonoma State student-athletes to cross the plate at least twice in the contest. Rylee Nishimoto and Giana Hay each scored three times.

The game was back and forth early, with the first two innings taking nearly 90 minutes, but once the Seawolves grabbed the lead, they did not give it back. Cal State East Bay cut their deficit to 11-8 with a four-run third inning rally but they immediately answered with Romano's three-run shot in the third. They added single runs in the fifth and sixth to run-rule the Pioneers.

Sarah Fukushima scored three runs out of her leadoff spot for Cal State East Bay. She finished the game 1-of-2 with a walk, an RBI, and those three runs. Sarah Duran went 2-for-3 and drove in three.

Sonoma State will advance in the winners bracket to face the No. 2 seed, Chico State, later today. Cal State East Bay drops into the elimination bracket and will face the loser of No. 1 Cal State San Marcos and No. 5 Cal State Monterey Bay in an elimination game on Saturday, May 6, at 11 a.m.
