For the second consecutive season and the third time overall, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos are the CCAA Baseball Tournament champions! Cal Poly Pomona swept through the tournament, winning all three games to earn the CCAA's automatic bid to the NCAA postseason. The Broncos completed their run with an 8-5 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Trailing 5-4 going into the seventh inning, the Broncos rallied for four runs to take the lead. An RBI groundout by Nick Lugo with the bases loaded tied the game. AJ Nimeh then doubled into the gap to score two more. He came around to score two batters later when Ryon Knowles sliced a two-out single to left. Over their three games in the tournament, Cal Poly Pomona outscored their opponents 20-2 after the sixth inning.
Noel Soto gave the Broncos a chance at a comeback with his work out of the bullpen. Soto, who has been a starter all season, came into the game to start the fifth inning and cooled off the Toros' bats with three innings of one-run ball. He struck out four, and he did not walk a batter. Soto came through with the critical shutdown inning after the Broncos had scored four in the seventh to keep all the momentum in Cal Poly Pomona's dugout, and they would never give it back.
Closer Eric Romo was called on to get a six-out save, and he delivered two perfect innings without allowing a baserunner. It was his seventh save of the season.
Cesar Lopez had three hits to lead Cal Poly Pomona. Nimeh had three RBI, and eight of the nine starters scored a run. Scott Ogrin stayed hot for Cal State Dominguez Hills. He went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two RBI. He earned co-MVP of the tournament along with Cal Poly Pomona's Casey Slattery.
The Broncos earn the CCAA's automatic bid to the regionals. They will learn their opponent and where they will play on the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, May 15, at 7 p.m. on
