Cal Poly Pomona put up 16 runs, and Will Rudy struck out 10 to lead the Broncos to a 16-5 win over Cal State San Bernardino in the second round of the 2022 CCAA Baseball Tournament.
Ryon Knowles had four RBI from his leadoff spot, and Tyler Chaffee went 4-for-5 with three RBI with four runs scored.
Chaffee got the scoring started with a bases-loaded, two-run single in the fourth. He would come in later in the inning on the double by AJ Nimeh as the Broncos went up 5-0 after four innings.
Cal State San Bernardino rallied against the CCAA Most Valuable Pitcher Will Rudy in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3. They loaded the bases on a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch. An error plated the first run of the inning, and a sacrifice fly by Daryl Ruiz scored another. The Broncos committed one more error in the inning to allow another earned run before Rudy struck out AJ Barraza to end the rally.
Cal Poly Pomona answered with runs in each of the next three innings to go up 16-3, with the game being broken open with a five-run seventh. Knowles, who was awarded the CCAA Elite 13 Award before the game for having the best GPA in the championships, delivered the big hit in the inning as his triple cleared the bases.
Will Rudy earned the victory to improve to 8-1 on the season. He went six innings allowing four hits and three runs (two earned). He walked two and struck out 10.
Cal Poly Pomona will advance to the 2022 CCAA Baseball Tournament semifinals, where they will face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m.
