Toros capitalize on big third inning to advance in CCAA Tournament

Cal State Dominguez Hills fully capitalized on its opportunities in the third inning as the Toros scored six runs and seized all the momentum en route to an 11-5 win over Chico State in the opening round of the 2022 CCAA Baseball Tournament.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills will move into the double-elimination bracket, while Chico State is eliminated from the 2022 CCAA Baseball Tournament.

In the early innings, the Wildcats put the momentum in their dugout with two runs in the first off first-team All-CCAA selection Isaac Mullins. The Wildcats could have had more as the Toros gifted them with an error and a dropped pop fly in the inning, but Cal State Dominguez Hills threw a runner out at the plate for the second out to limit the damage to two runs.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills cut the deficit in half in the second on a two-out hit by Matt Mecate before breaking the game open with a six-run third inning. Chico State helped fuel the rally for the Toros as they walked six batters in the inning, including walking three runners home. Alberto Luevano picked up two RBI in the inning on a single, and Emilio Barrera capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout.
 
Chico State got one more run off Mullins in the bottom of the third, but he battled his way into the seventh to earn his eighth win of the season (8-2).
 
Pierson Loska and Barrera would add insurance runs on a pair of two-run homers.
 
Jack Murphy went 5-for-5 with three runs scored for the Wildcats, who outhit the Toros 12-11. Barrera finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Loska, Luevano, and Mecate all drove in two runs apiece.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills will advance to the play the top seed, Cal State Monterey Bay, on Saturday at 11 a.m.
