Sonoma State righty Michael Benz has been selected this week’s Baseball Pitcher of the Week, for the week of April 18-24, after a stellar outing last Saturday.

Benz threw a seven-inning complete game shutout in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader, leading the Seawolves over Cal State L.A. He allowed just four hits — all singles — and struck out seven without a walk in the 2-0 win.

The junior from Corte Madera retired the final 12 batters he faced after yielding two singles and a stolen base in the top of the fourth. He recorded a strikeout and induced a pop-up double-play to end the Golden Eagles threat.

Benz had been a long reliever in recent weeks but made his sixth start of the season on Saturday.

The Seawolves, 8-2 in the last 10 games, are vying for a CCAA postseason berth as they improved to 16-16 in league play. SSU travels to Carson to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills this weekend.

Also Nominated:
Drew Atherton, Cal Poly Pomona
Ethan Brodsky, Cal State East Bay
