Francisco Pedraza sparks CSUEB offense in sweep to receive Baseball Player of the Week honor

Leading the Pioneers’ offensively, Francisco Pedraza has snagged this week’s Baseball Player of the Week award, for the week of April 18-24.

Pedraza, Cal State East Bay’s outfielder, batted .353, going 6-for-17, with two home runs and drove in six runs as the Pioneers swept Cal State Dominguez Hills. The leadoff batter also had a .353 on-base percentage and a .765 slugging percentage.

The sweep kept Cal State East Bay in the race for a CCAA Baseball Tournament berth. Cal State East Bay won three of the four games by one run and had a three-run margin in Friday’s opener in Hayward.

The senior from Alameda had a hit in each game of the series, highlighted by a 3-for-4 game in the second game on Saturday. He hit a dinger, drove in two runs, scored once and stole a base in that game, a 3-2 win.

Pedraza also homered in game one on Saturday, giving him a two-homer day. He drove in three runs in the 5-4 CSUEB victory.

As the right-fielder, Pedraza recorded nine putouts without an error.

Cal State East Bay is now tied for sixth with Sonoma State in the CCAA standings. The Pioneers (23-19, 16-16 CCAA) look to extend their five-game winning streak at Cal State San Bernardino starting on Friday.
