Will Rudy, who threw a gem to lead Cal Poly Pomona to a dominating series opener win over Chico State, has been named this week’s CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Rudy tossed eight shutout innings and gave up just a single against 14th-ranked Chico State last Friday night to earn the award for the week of Feb. 28-March 6. Rudy, a freshman from Irvine, struck out 12 and faced the minimum number of batters in the stellar outing.

Rudy had a perfect game through the first five innings before allowing a leadoff infield single in the sixth, which turned out to be Chico’s only hit in the game. His performance on the mound inspired the Broncos as the offense scored 14 runs in the shutout.

The shutout was Cal Poly Pomona program’s first 9-inning shutout against Chico State.

Cal Poly Pomona, now 8-8 overall and 3-4 in CCAA play, won the series 2-1 against Chico State (the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was canceled due to weather). The Broncos will travel to take on Cal State Monterey Bay this weekend.

Also Nominated:
Tony Jacob, Stanislaus State
Ethan McRae, Cal State Monterey Bay
Raul Salazar, Cal State San Bernardino
Damon Treadwell, Cal State Dominguez Hills
