ARCATA, Calif. - Akayla Hackson and Jordan Vasquez each recorded double-doubles, and all five starters for Cal State San Marcos scored in double figures to lead the top seed to a 73-60 win over the No. 5 seed Chico State in the semifinals of the 2022 CCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
Jordan Vazquez pulled down 16 rebounds, the seventh-most in CCAA Tournament history, to go along with her 14 points (5-of-7) and five assists. Hackson added 14 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Those were nine of the 17 assists that the Cougars had on 27 made-baskets. Cal State San Marcos also received 11 points from Dynnah Buckner and 10 points apiece from Kelsey Forrester and Sydney Buckley. Charity Gallegos scored 16 points to lead Chico State. She was the only Wildcat in double figures.
Cal State San Marcos came ready to play in the first half. They went on a 9-2 run to close out the first quarter with an 18-11 advantage, and they never surrendered the lead. They added to their advantage throughout the first half until they led 44-27 at the half.
Chico State would not go away so easily with their season on the line. They cut the deficit to single-digits (57-48) early in the fourth quarter. The Cougars responded with a quick 8-2 run to go back up by 15 points. The Wildcats made a final push and cut the deficit to seven (65-58) with two minutes remaining, but they would get no closer as the Cougars executed down the stretch to hold the lead.
Cal State San Marcos will advance to the 2022 CCAA Women's Basketball Championship against the No. 2 seed, Cal State East Bay. The game will be played on Saturday, March 5 at 5 p.m., and it can be watched at
