ARCATA, Calif. - The toughness of Cal State East Bay was on full display in the second half of the semifinals game of the 2022 CCAA Women's Basketball Championship. After a slow start, the No. 2 seeded Pioneers regrouped at halftime and outscored No. 3 seed Cal State LA by 23 points in the second half to earn the 74-63 victory.
Delia Moore led four Pioneers in scoring with 22 points. Mina Tameliau came off the bench to register 19 points. Zhane Duckett added 16 points, and Madison Schiller chipped in with 10.
Lily Buggs closed out her freshman campaign by leading Cal State LA in scoring (20) and rebounding (9). Nicole Flennaugh and Anai Washington added 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Early in the game, it looked like Cal State LA might pull the upset over the West region's top-ranked team as they built a 22-14 lead after the first quarter and led 38-26 at halftime. However, the second half was a reversal of fortunes.
Cal State East Bay chipped away at the lead throughout the third quarter before using a 13-2 run to take the lead right before the end of the quarter. The Pioneers continued to add to their advantage until it reached double figures at 65-54. Cal State LA continued to battle to the last buzzer but came up short.
Cal State East Bay will advance to the championship game where it will face the No. 1 seed, Cal State San Marcos, on Saturday, March 5 at 5 p.m.
