SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino overcame a 25-point deficit to avoid the upset against No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona and move to the semifinals of the NCAA West Regional with a 72-69 victory.

Cal Poly Pomona was the last team into the NCAA field, and their student-athletes played with an energy that reflected that opportunity throughout the first half. After taking the first few trading baskets with the Yotes early, the Broncos went on a 23-3 run, turning a three-point deficit (8-5) into a 17-point lead (28-11).

A four-point play by BJ Standley with 3:28 remaining extended the lead to 42-17, and it looked Cal State San Bernardino might just be having an off-night, but that is when Eddie Davis and Darius Lubom checked back in the game.

The Yotes quickly put together a 12-2 run, highlighted by two 3-pointers from Davis and a pair of layups by Daytone Jennings, to cut the Broncos' lead to 44-29 at the half.

The momentum from the late run carried over to the second half as Cal State San Bernardino continued to whittle away at the lead. They cut it to single-digits (50-42) with 14:38 left and took the lead (54-53) at the nine-minute mark on a 3-pointer by Brandon Knapper.

Cal Poly Pomona would not yield easily, as they answered with an 11-4 run to go back up by six (64-58) on a jumper by Standley with six minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Broncos, this would be their last basket until the game's final minute.

Davis led an 11-0 outburst by the Yotes as he scored nine of the 11 points. He hit a 3-pointer, a pair of tough layups, and finished the run by bringing the hometown crowd to their feet with a driving one-handed dunk.

The Broncos would cut the lead back to 3-points, and they had a shot to tie the game as time expired, but their shot hit iron, and the Yotes advanced with the victory.

Davis finished with 32 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. He added eight rebounds, four assists, and a block. Daytone Jennings chipped in with 14 points and seven boards, and Darius Mickens had 12 and six. BJ Standley paced Cal Poly Pomona with 16 points. Phoenix Shackleford posted 15 points and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. All five starters for the Broncos had a steal, and Shackleford and Jaden Winfield had three apiece.

Cal State San Bernardino will face No. 3 seed Chico State in the semifinals on Saturday, March 12 at 5 p.m.
