Chico State's Willie Lajoie picks up season's first CCAA Player of the Week award

Chico State’s Willie Lajoie enjoyed a phenomenal opening weekend as he earned the season’s first CCAA Baseball Player of the Week award, for the week of Jan. 31-Feb. 6.

Lajoie led Chico State to a four-game home series sweep over Saint Martin’s at Nettleton Stadium as baseball resumed in the CCAA after a 697 day hiatus.

The first baseman batted .533, going 8 for 15 to power the Wildcats offense, which scored 59 runs in the four-game set. Lajoie collected eight hits, with three doubles and two home runs to post a 1.133 slugging percentage. He drove in a total of seven runs and scored nine times. The junior from Tustin, also walked three times and was hit by pitch once for a .632 on-base percentage during the series.

Lajoie went 2-for-5 with two doubles, drove in three runs and scored once in the Wildcats’ 13-0 win in Friday’s season opener. In Saturday’s first game, his two-run homer in the first inning gave Chico the early lead before finishing with a 3-for-4 game. In Saturday’s nightcap, he drew a walk, was hit by a pitch and scored a run in two at bats. In Sunday’s finale, Lajoie hit another two-run blast to give Chico a 5-3 lead in the fifth before ending up with another 3-for-4 game.

Defensively at first base, Lajoie was errorless and recorded 15 putouts with an assist and was part of two double-plays.

Chico State next travels to Fresno to take on Fresno Pacific in a three-game set on Feb. 11 and 12.
