KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team achieved many expectations in the 2022 season. To name a few, the Toros climbed to the top five in the United Soccer Coaches poll, they clinched a CCAA championship and made a run in the NCAA tournament.
For their leadership, the Toros coaching staff, led by
Eddie Soto and assistant coaches
Patryk Tenorio,
Eddie Garcia,
Hunter Stewart and
Amos Hernandez, was voted the United Soccer Coaches Division II West Region Coaching Staff of the Year, the first honor of its kind in the decorated history of the program.
In just his fourth year at the helm, Soto, along with his staff, steered the Toros to a 15-2-5 record. They finished 7-0-4 in conference play, marking the third time in the program to have an unbeaten season and was resulted the first CCAA championship since 2015.
The Toros outscored their opponents 50-18 while posting just 11 shutouts the entire season.
Dominguez Hills started the campaign outside the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 but got in on the first updated poll two weeks into the season and stayed there the rest of the season. A final poll is to be announced after the NCAA Championship this weekend.
During the Toros' conference championship run, they posted a 1-0 road victory over the defending national champions and then-No. 1 Cal State LA and got a positive 3-3 draw with then-No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona the same weekend.
Despite missing out on a CCAA Tournament championship, the Toros received an at-large bid to NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2017, reaching as far as the third round.
It is the second time in the calendar year the Dominguez Hills Athletics Department saw a program win a coaches' association's coaching staff of the year award. The softball team received the same honor through the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in the spring after the Toros won the program's first NCAA West Region championship.
