Jordan Aldama made two clutch saves in the shootout, and the No. 7 seeded Cal Poly Pomona team never missed with their chances to earn a 4-2 shootout win over No. 6 seed West Texas A&M to advance to the championship match of the NCAA Super Region 4. (Dec. 2)
The Broncos (14-4-4) dominated most of the first half, but it led only 1-0 at halftime as the Buffs' keeper made multiple great saves and other chances hit the post. Oscar Griehsel Facey put the first goal on the board in the 44th minute on an assist from Jerry Ramirez.
Coming out of halftime, it was apparent something had changed with West Texas A&M as they had an extra bounce in their step. The Buffs tied the match in the 54th minute on a header by Giancarlo Saldana and took the lead 15 minutes later when Saldana assisted on a goal to Anthony Perea to give West Texas A&M the 2-1 lead.
Things were not looking great for Cal Poly Pomona as time continued to tick away to under four minutes. The Broncos battled and got consecutive corner kicks, and the second paid off. Max Laguna sent the ball into the box near Eduardo Faria. The defender was distracted by the movement of Faria, and when he tried to head the ball away, he accidentally knocked it into his own goal to tie the match at 2-2.
It remained tied through both overtime periods, and the match went to a shootout to determine which team would advance to the Super Region Championship match. Aldama saved each of West Texas A&M's first two attempts, and Broncos made four straight shots to clinch the victory.
Aldama finished the match with four saves, and his counterpart, Tom Miles, had six saves for the Buffs.
Cal Poly Pomona will play Cal State LA for the Super Region championship on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m.
