The CCAA Executive Council has approved a bylaw that allows all student-athletes the opportunity to vote annually on every national Election Day.

The motion, brought forward by the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, notes that all CCAA student-athletes will not compete, practice, or participate in any other countable athletically-related activities (CARA) on Election Day, the first Tuesday after November 1st, every year.

"Part of our civic duty as citizens is to make our voices heard by voting,” reflected CCAA commissioner Mitch Cox. “By prohibiting any and all athletic activity on election day in November, the CCAA schools are making a strong statement in support of our democracy and instilling the notion of civic responsibility in our student-athletes."

Along with standing unified in the desire for civic engagement on the conference level, the CCAA is aligned regionally and nationally with Division I, II and III counterparts across the collegiate athletics landscape. This measure echoes encouragement from this summer by the NCAA at-large, and also mirrors legislation that was proposed by the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and approved their Council last month.

With a national minimum voting age of 18, many student-athletes will be exercising their right to vote for the first time in 2020 or participating in their first presidential election cycle. The conference encourages student-athletes to get informed about the voting process and the issues and candidates on their local and national ballot before casting their vote. For Californians, the deadline to register to vote this November is Monday, Oct. 19, for online and mail-in registration. For those that miss the deadline, conditional voter registration can also occur in-person at their county elections office, polling place or vote center.
