Record 351 Student-Athletes Earn Fall All-Academic Distinction Jan 16, 2020 2019 CCAA Fall All-Academic Team (.pdf) CALIFORNIA – A benchmark 351 men and women who compete in the fall sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball across the CCAA been honored for their work in the classroom as members of the 2019 CCAA Fall All-Academic Team. The seasonal academic awards which were instituted in 2014, showcase individuals who are not only excelling on the field of competition but maintaining high standards in their studies, achieving a true "life in the balance" as a student-athlete. For the fall, a tally of 351 student-athletes made the grade from across the CCAA’s 13 member institutions, a 12.5 percent increase from last year’s lists and a new record number of fall athletes earning distinction. Of the 351 honorees, 145 are making a repeat appearance on the list. A total of 52 seniors have earned distinction in each year of eligibility for the award. An impressive 85 men and women, or 24.2 percent of the pool, maintain a cumulative gpa of 3.80 or better. Seven student-athletes representing six different institutions sport an unblemished 4.0 in their academic pursuits. Four women’s soccer student athletes keep a perfect gpa: Bailey Cockrill (Cal State San Marcos), Lia Kilgore (Cal State Monterey Bay), Sabine Postma (Humboldt State), and Allee Vincent (Sonoma State). Brittney Duquette (Cal State East Bay; women’s cross country), Gretta Kirby (Chico State; volleyball), and Cameron Smith (Cal State San Marcos; men’s soccer) round out the magnificent seven. Sport-by-sport, every discipline saw an increase in honorees. Women’s soccer is represented by 135 players, up 14.4 percent and making up the bulk of the list. Volleyball follows with 75 representatives, with men’s soccer next at 70. A total of 48 women’s cross country and 23 men’s cross country competitors round out the sport breakdown. Sonoma State led all fall honorees as 35 student-athletes made the grade with Cal State East Bay at 33 and Humboldt State with 31. The pairing of Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State San Marcos follow with 29 apiece, with San Francisco State (28) and Cal State Monterey Bay (27) next. The trio of Chico State, Stanislaus State and UC San Diego come in next with 26 student-athletes, with Cal Poly Pomona (23), Cal State LA (22) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (16) rounding out the members of the 2019 CCAA Fall All-Academic Team. Nine schools saw an increase in 2019, with the biggest percentage of change going to Chico State, elevating their number by an impressive 62.5 percent. Noticeable increases were also seen by Cal State San Bernardino (31.8%), Sonoma State (29.6%) and Cal State East Bay (26.9%). The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter and spring – for all CCAA sponsored sports. In order to earn CCAA All-Academic team honors, a student-athlete must be of sophomore athletic standing or higher, and own a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport in that season. The CCAA Fall All-Academic Team consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Winter All-Academic Team will honor men’s and women’s basketball players, with the Spring All-Academic Team consisting of student-athletes from men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s track and field, softball and baseball. The remainder of the season all-academic selections will be announced at the conclusion of the spring academic term when grades are finalized.
