Chavez, Martinez Earns Weekly CCAA Baseball Awards


Cal State San Bernardino’s Gabe Chavez is joined by Cal State East Bay Brian Martinez as CCAA Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 1-7, respectively.

Chavez, a senior infielder from West Covina, is earning his second weekly award of the season after powering the Coyotes to the series win against San Francisco State dropping the Gators to third in the league standings. Chavez went .600 for the weekend, going 9-for-15 from the plate with three extra-base hits and five runs batted in. Chavez crossed the plate eight times over the weekend as the Coyotes reached the 10-run threshold in the final two games of the series.

Martinez, a junior from Livermore, pitched her first career shutout on the back end of Saturday's doubleheader versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. The southpaw allowed just four singles and issued one walk in the seven-inning game, and he retired the final seven batters in a dramatic 1-0 victory.

Martinez was also named NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week for his shutout performance against the Toros.

The Pioneers host San Francisco State for a four-game series while Cal State San Bernardino welcomes the current league leaders No. 3 UC San Diego for the first half of a home & home before a Sunday doubleheader in La Jolla.
