Chavez, Tinsley Take Home Baseball Weekly Honors

Helping their squads to solid performances against two of the nation’s Top 10 teams, Cal State San Bernardino’s Gabe Chavez and Rylan Tinsley of Stanislaus State have been selected as CCAA Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 4-10, respectively.

Chavez, a senior from West Covina, finished a three-game series against No. 7 Southern New Hampshire with eight hits in 14 place appearances with four RBI. The infielder opened the weekend with a 5-for-6 effort with a double and a home run in a 10-inning defeat. The Coyotes bounced back to take the final two games of the matchup to claim the series win, going 3-for-8 with one run scored and two batted in in the doubleheader.

On the mound, Tinsley was impressive in his first collegiate start as the true freshman blanked No. 8 Azusa Pacific to lead the Warriors to a 3-0 win on Saturday. The lefty hurler allowed just two hits and struck out seven in six innings of work. Hailing from Stockton, Tinsley started the game fanning four of the first six Cougars to take command, and retired 12 of the first 13 batters faced before a single in the fifth.

Both weekly conference awards are firsts for the pair.

Stanislaus State opens conference action against Chico State, playing Friday and Saturday in Chico before returning to Turlock for a Sunday doubleheader.
