SAN RAMON, Calif. – A new spring benchmark of 349 spring student-athletes from across the 13 member institutions of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) have been recognized for their work in the classroom as a member of the CCAA Spring All-Academic Team.
The seasonal academic awards which were instituted in 2014, showcase individuals who are a sophomore in athletic standing or higher who maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport. For the spring, athletes who compete in the sports of men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s track and field, softball and baseball with valid academic credentials are eligible for recognition.
Of the 349 honorees, 135 are making a repeat appearance on the Spring All-Academic Team, and 44 men and women find themselves on the spring list for their third time. Despite the 3.3 gpa threshold, more than 60 percent of the honorees keep at least a 3.5, with 209 individuals in that category. Additionally, 61 student-athletes surpass the 3.8 benchmark, and one spring honoree – Cal State Monterey Bay junior track and field athlete, Natalie Vaughn – maintains a perfect 4.0 gpa for the Otters as she pursues a degree in environmental studies.
More than a third of the Spring All-Academic honorees compete in women’s track and field, with 115 women earning distinction. Baseball follows with 90 men on the list, and softball comes in next with 64 honorees. Men’s track and field placed 50 on the Spring All-Academic Team, followed by 19 for women’s golf, in its first year as a CCAA-sponsored sport. Twelve men’s golfers were also recognized.
Cal State San Marcos student-athletes led the way with 41 men and women named to the Spring All-Academic Team, followed closely by UC San Diego’s tally of 38. Cal State East Bay had 34 student-athletes earn honors, followed by Chico State’s 34 and the trio of Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State each placing 31 spring athletes on the list. Sonoma State (24), Humboldt State (22), Stanislaus State (21) Cal State Dominguez Hills (17), Cal State San Bernardino (15), and Cal State LA (10) round out the spring selections by school.
All told, a grand total of 749 student-athletes earned seasonal academic recognition during the 2017-18 school year, including the
fall and
winter.
