SAN RAMON, Calif. – An impressive tally of 314 men and women who compete in the fall sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball across the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) have been honored for their work in the classroom as members of the 2017 CCAA Fall All-Academic Team.
The seasonal academic awards which were instituted in 2014, showcase individuals who are a sophomore in athletic standing or higher who maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport.
“As proud as we are of the accomplishments that CCAA student-athletes achieve in their chosen sport, the real measure of success comes from how they perform in the classroom,” said Interim Commissioner Mitch Cox. “These student-athletes have shown once again that the CCAA and Division II excel in providing a balance between athletic achievement and academic success."
Of the 314 honorees, 140 are making a repeat appearance on the Fall All-Academic Team. A total of 73 student-athletes maintain a cumulative gpa of at least 3.80 or better with each school in the league having multiple athletes fall into this category.
Seven men and women sport an unblemished 4.0 in their respective studies – Bekah Boyle (Chico State; volleyball); Bailey Cockrill (Cal State San Marcos; women’s soccer); Gabby Evaristo (Cal State San Bernardino; women’s soccer); Sierra Jarriel (Humboldt State; women’s soccer); Mia Owens (Humboldt State; women’s cross country); Tyler Perez (Sonoma State; men’s soccer); Sabine Postma (Humboldt State; women’s soccer).
Sport-by-sport, a total of 107 women’s soccer players received accolades with more than 27 percent of the participating student-athletes from across the Conference reaching the 3.3 gpa threshold. Six programs – Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State East Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Humboldt State and Stanislaus State – boast at least 10 women on the list.
Also honored on the CCAA Fall All-Academic team are 69 volleyball players, 64 men’s soccer athletes, 50 women’s cross country runners and 24 men’s cross country competitors.
For the second year in a row, Cal State East Bay led all fall honorees with 36 student-athletes named. Cal Poly Pomona (33) and Cal State San Marcos (30) followed closely behind in the selections. Humboldt State was fourth with 26 student athletes named, followed by Cal State San Bernardino (25), Chico State (24), Stanislaus State (24), UC San Diego (24), San Francisco State (21), Cal State Monterey Bay (20, Sonoma State (20), Cal State Dominguez Hills (16), and Cal State LA (15).
The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter and spring – for all CCAA sponsored sports. In order to earn CCAA All-Academic team honors, a student-athlete must be of sophomore athletic standing or higher, and own a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better while competing in a Conference-sponsored sport in that season.
The CCAA Fall All-Academic Team consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Winter All-Academic Team will honor men’s and women’s basketball players, with the Spring All-Academic Team consisting of student-athletes from men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s track and field, softball and baseball.
