ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - Cal State Monterey Bay’s Griffin Welch has been named the FloCollege/CCAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award for the week of Sept. 14-20.

Welch anchored CSUMB to an undefeated week, allowing only one goal in 180 minutes of play. He allowed just one goal in the 1-1 draw against Stanislaus State, backed by a strong defensive effort from the Otters. Welch’s week was highlighted by a six-save shutout against No.1 Cal State LA, where he faced 22 shots, making the Otters the first team this season to earn a point against the Golden Eagles. 

The junior goalkeeper from Long Beach, Calif., finished the week with a 0.50 goals-against average to help the Otters improve to 4-1-2 on the season. Welch now ranks third in saves per game (3.71), sixth in shutouts per game (2), and seventh in goals against average (1.45) in the CCAA. Click here to see the complete CCAA stats leaders.

Cal State Monterey Bay (4-1-2) is hoping to keep its unbeaten streak alive as they travel to San Marcos this Friday to face the Cougars. On Sunday, the Otters will continue CCAA play against Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Stadium.
