Lumberjacks take down the Cougars in a defensive showdown

POMONA, Calif. - In one of the best defensive battles of the CCAA Tournament in years, No. 3 seed Cal Poly Humboldt outlasted No. 6 Cal State San Marcos 62-52 to advance to the tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year. (Mar. 6)
 
Zaveion Bineyard went 6-of-7 from the field to lead four Lumberjacks in double-figures with 18 points. He also added nine rebounds, two steals, and three blocks. Shakir Odunewu registered a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Odunewu and Bineyard combined for 20 of Humboldt’s 33 rebounds, as it outrebounded CSUSM by three. Rob Jenkins added 13 points and four assists. Dorell Thomas came off the bench to score 1,0 and Wayne Hampton III had five assists in a reserve role. 
 
Micah Boone’s 19 points paced Cal State San Marcos. He went 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Chris Carrillo scored 18 points, including 11 in the first half. Keavie Love added 10 points as the trio combined for 47 of the Cougars’ 52 points. 
 
The game began with Cal State San Marcos bringing the defensive intensity. Cal Poly Humboldt could not find its offensive rhythm, taking just 16 shots in the first half. Meanwhile, CSUSM put up 26 shots but went just 8-of-26 from the field. Humboldt led at halftime 26-21.  
 
In the second half, Cal State San Marcos battled back and cut the deficit to one (32-31) with 15 minutes remaining. That is when Humboldt went on a 12-3 run to take a 10-point lead (44-34). CSUSM cut Humboldt’s advantage to three points (50-47) with 4:42 on the clock, but this is as close as the Cougars would get the rest of the way. The Lumberjacks would close the game on a 12-5 run as it hit 8-of-11 free throws down the stretch. 
 
Cal Poly Humboldt will advance to the CCAA Tournament semifinals, where it will face the No. 2 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Mar. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
