POMONA, Calif. - No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona led wire-to-wire to defeat the No. 4 seed Cal State Monterey Bay in the quarterfinals of the 2026 CCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
Six of the seven Bronco student-athletes who stepped foot on the court scored at least nine points.
Kevin Simeth filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.
Demarreya Lewis-Cooper and
Malcolm Bell added 14 points apiece, and
Michael Saba came off the bench to score 13 points.
Jaden Tengan had a game-high 27 points for Cal State Monterey Bay.
Mezziah Oakman registered a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Michael Mora added 13 points and three steals.
Cal Poly Pomona scored the first four points of the game, and they would never give up the lead. CSUMB would tie the game at 7-7, but CPP answered with a 10-0 run, and the Otters were forced to play from behind the rest of the way. The Broncos built a 13-point lead in the first half before the Otters cut it to seven (37-30) on Tengan's layup right before halftime.
Cal Poly Pomona started the second half on a 13-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 50-32. CPP was still up 17 points with five minutes remaining when CSUMB hit a run to make it a two-possession game. A 12-2 run would cut the Broncos' lead to seven (70-63) with two minutes left. The Otters would get the game down to five (72-67) with 23 seconds remaining, but the Broncos were able to hold them off at the free throw line to get the win.
Cal Poly Pomona will now advance to the semifinals, where it will face undefeated Cal State East Bay (28-0, 22-0 CCAA). The game will tip at 8 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 6.
