Cal State Monterey Bay’s Damon Smith has been named the FloCollege/CCAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct 12-18.

Smith helped anchor the Otters’ back line during a successful 2-0 week, as CSUMB picked up consecutive 2-1 victories over Fresno Pacific and No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino. Smith made an impact contributing on both ends of the field, scoring the early go-ahead goal against the Coyotes. 

The senior defender opened the week by playing 90 minutes in the Otters’ victory over Fresno Pacific, holding the Sunbirds to only one goal. He followed with another complete performance against Cal State San Bernardino, scoring in the 22nd minute to give Monterey Bay an early lead against the nationally-ranked Coyotes. Smith and the Otter defense held CSUSB without a shot in the first half before preserving the 2-1 road victory. 

The Palmdale, Calif., native helped CSUMB extend its winning streak to five consecutive matches while earning a key conference victory over Cal State San Bernardino. Click here to see the complete CCAA stats leaders.

Cal State Monterey Bay (9-2-3, 5-1-3 CCAA) now looks ahead to Thursday night as they host the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Otters will host the Cal State East Bay Pioneers at 2 p.m.
