Chico State’s Mario Giannini has picked up the Flo/College CCAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week award after the season’s first meet for most programs.

At the Kim Duyst Cross Country Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State, Giannini continued his impressive career with a time of 23:31.0 in the 8K race. Giannini, a junior from Chico, finished second behind Cal’s Justin Pretre to lead the Wildcats at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres.

Chico State was third in the team standings in a field of strong competition which included eight Division I programs. Only UC Davis and Cal finished ahead of the No. 7 ranked Wildcats.

Giannini was about 17 seconds behind the winner. He was less than three seconds shy of his career best in the 8K.

Chico State will compete next at the Mike Johnson Classic, Sept. 27, in Monmouth, Ore. The meet serves as a regional preview as the Ash Creek Preserve, which will be the site of the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 8.
