SAN MARCOS – Rob Diaz III scored 24 points, and Marsai Mason came off the bench and recorded a double-double to lead No. 4 Cal Poly Humboldt to its first CCAA Tournament victory in 10 years with a 70-52 win over No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona.
 
The Lumberjacks shot .500 percent in the first half and held the Broncos to .286 percent shooting to build a 38-26 halftime lead. CPP found its offensive rhythm to start the second half, scoring the first 10 points after the break to cut the deficit to two (38-36).
 
Humboldt answered with a layup by Josiah Sanders and an and-1 basket by Diaz III to push the lead back to seven (43-36). Cal Poly Pomona would not get closer the rest of the way, but they had it down to 10 at 60-50 with just over six minutes left. Again, Humboldt had the answer as it put together a 6-0 spurt to stop the Broncos' run.
 
Diaz III finished 10-of-15 from the field and 3-of-6 from long range to lead all scorers with 24 points. Mason went 8-of-11 from the field to score 18 points while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Kalib LaCount also reached double-figures with 15 points (5-of-8) and led the Lumberjacks with five assists.
 
Miles Lewis led the Broncos with 16 points, and Kevin Simeth had eight rebounds..
 
Humboldt finished the game shooting at .491 percent while holding CPP to .323 percent shooting.
 
Cal Poly Humboldt will advance to the CCAA Men's Basketball Tournament semifinals, where it will face the No. 1 seed, Cal State Dominguez Hills, at 2:30 p.m.
