The Coyotes trailed 37-28 at halftime and cut the Sea Lions' advantage to just four (42-38) with 17:04 remaining. A 7-0 spurt by PLNU pushed the lead to double-figures (49-38). CSUSB kept chipping away and had it back to a two-possession game (49-43) with 11 minutes remaining but were unable to get any closer.
Later in the second half, three CSUSB student-athletes, including two starters would foul out for the Coyotes as they had to go deep into their bench to close the game. This would lead to 43 free throw attempts for Point Loma, the most for a PLNU team since it had 47 free throws attempts against CSUSB during the 2018-19 season.
Cal State San Bernardino finished its previous two seasons in the NCAA semifinals. The Coyotes had won the past two NCAA West Regionals and picked up a win in the Elite Eight in back-to-back seasons. The Coyotes close the 2024-25 season at 23-12.
Point Loma will advance to the 2025 regional championship game, where it will face CCAA regular season and tournament champions, Cal State Dominguez Hills, on Monday, Mar. 17, at 7 p.m.
