TURLOCK, Calif. - Cal State East Bay is advancing to the semifinals of the CCAA Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2018 after pulling off an upset over No. 3 seed Cal State LA in four sets, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, and 25-19.
The sixth-seeded Pioneers were dominant at the net, outblocking the Golden Eagles 6-2 and preventing them from open looks.
Jada Stone and
Natali Herrera led the way, posting five blocks apiece. That effort at the net helped CSUEB hit 84 points better than Cal State LA in the four sets (.248 to .164).
Barakat Adekola and Stone led the offensive attack as each posted 13 kills. Adekola also had a match-best 21 digs as she recorded her 16th double-double of the season.
Malayah Adams added eight more kills, and
Fane Paua chipped in with seven kills and four aces. Setter
Pi'ilani Carvalho posted 36 assists to go with her three aces.
Ayjah Landers' 15 kills led three Golden Eagles in double-figures.
Samarah DaCoud added 14, and
Zuhal Cetin had 12 kills.
Cal State East Bay outhit Cal State LA in the first set by over .200 percentage points and made only two attack errors to win the set 25-18 and take the early lead.
Cal State LA evened the match back with a 25-22 win in set two. The set was close down the stretch as CSUEB brought it to within one point at 20-19 and 23-22, but each time CSLA responded to hold the lead. Landers recorded five of her 15 kills in the set, including three of the final five points for the Golden Eagles.
That momentum did not carry over to the third set for Cal State LA, as Cal State East Bay answered back with its best set. The Pioneers did not make a hitting error in the set and posted a .370 hitting percentage compared to a .146 mark for the Golden Eagles.
The fourth set went back and forth and was tied at 11-11. Cal State East Bay then went on a 5-0 run, which gave them a lead the Golden Eagles could not overcome. Cal State East Bay would proceed to outscore Cal State LA down the stretch 14-8.
Cal State East Bay will now advance to the semifinals of the 2025 CCAA Volleyball Tournament, where it will face the No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m.
