Cal State San Marcos’ Sankalp Shastri has been chosen as CCAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, for the week of Sept. 16-22.
At the UCR Cross Country Invitational in Riverside, Shastri was the top CCAA runner with a fast early-season time of 24:21.9. The junior from Aliso Viejo posted an average mile time of 4:54.1 in the 8K race. The large meet consisted of 248 runners from mostly Division I and other top non-DI programs at the UCR Agg Course.
Shastri’s personal career best time was the sixth best time posted in the conference this season with only five Chico State runners with quicker times. It would have placed him ahead of the CCAA champion at the championship meet last November. He is the reigning CCAA champion in the 1500-meter race in outdoor track and field.
In the 8K Invite, eight Cougars posted PR times at the meet to lead CSUSM to a 14th place finish out of 26 teams. Shastri was 59th out of 248 runners.
CSUSM’s next outing is on Sept. 28 when the Cougars host the Cougar Challenge on campus.
