Humboldt’s Sophia Spoja wins first CCAA Defensive Player of the Week award of ‘24 Sep 10, 2024 Share: Complete list of weekly winners >>> Cal Poly Humboldt’s Sophia Spoja wins the first CCAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week of the 2024 season. (Sept. 2-8) The 6-0 defensive specialist was a key factor in Cal Poly Humboldt opening the year with three in-region wins and posting their best start since 2016. She averaged 4.0 digs per set (68 total), adding 14 assists and three aces as the team went 3-1 in Hilo, Hawaii. In the season opener against Western Oregon, Spoja registered a career-high 18 digs to go along with five assists. She would add 15 digs later in the day in a match against Hawaii Hilo and 17 on Friday against Hawaii Pacific. The junior closed the tournament by matching her career-high with 18 kills in a five-set win over Saint Martin’s. Spoja transferred to Cal Poly Humboldt after last season from Eastern Washington. Her mother, Angela, is the head coach of the Lumberjacks. Her 4.0 digs per set have Sophia ranked second in the conference. Click here to see the complete CCAA leaderboard. The Lumberjacks will travel to Grand Junction, Colo., this weekend (Sept 12-14) to face four teams in the Maverick Call Classic hosted by Colorado Mesa.
