Rene Cortez of Cal State LA has earned the votes to be named this season’s first CCAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Cortez spearheaded a stout Golden Eagles defense as No. 5 Cal State LA blanked Fresno Pacific, 2-0, to start the season last Thursday. The defense allowed just five shots by the Sunbirds in the game with none of them on frame. The graduate student from Chula Vista played all 90 minutes in helping LA extend its unbeaten streak to 15.

Cal State LA and Fresno Pacific were locked in a scoreless stalemate until the Golden Eagles scored twice in the final seven minutes. 

The Golden Eagles will be on the road in the Pacific Northwest for their next two matches. They take on Western Washington on Thursday and will be at Seattle Pacific on Saturday.
