Joshlyn Ayala earns CCAA Women’s Golfer of the Week award as Cal State LA made program history

Joshlyn Ayala of Cal State LA takes home CCAA Women’s Golfer of the Week after a third place finish at the SSU Spring Women’s Invite while helping the Golden Eagles make program history.

Ayala finished 9-over 144 in the 36-hole tournament at Foxtail Golf Club. She finished just one stroke behind second place and two strokes behind the individual medalist. Her third place finish tied with Brenna Ozel of Sonoma State. Ayala edged out Ozel for the weekly honor by virtue of having a better final round score while leading Cal State LA to a share of the team title. Ayala shot a 3-over on Tuesday, a stroke better than Opel’s +4.

Ayala, a sophomore from Downey, Calif., went 6-over 78 in the first round. In the second round, she went 3-over 75. Overall, she had three birdies, 22 pars, 10 bogeys, and one double bogey. 

Cal State LA made program history with its first tournament team victory. The Golden Eagles earned the team title based on a scorecard playoff. LA had the better fifth score in the second round with Morgan Sjoerdsma’s +10, 82 card. Simon Fraser’s fifth score was a +13, 85.

This is Ayala’s first top-10 finish this season and her first CCAA Women’s Golfer of the Week award. She's the third different Cal State LA golfer to win the weekly award this season. Click here to see a list of past CCAA weekly winners

Cal State LA competes next in the CCAA Women’s Golf Championships in Santa Rosa from April 22-24.
