Cal State LA earns first CCAA Tournament win since 2019

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Corey Cofield scored 21 points, and Eche Okeke added 20 to lead No. 3 seed Cal State LA to its first CCAA Tournament win since 2019 with an 84-62 victory over No. 6 seed San Francisco State. (Mar. 7)
 
Cofield went 6-of-7 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line to post his season-high in points. He also had a team-leading eight rebounds. Okeke shot 7-of-13 from the floor to help Cal State LA outshoot SF State from the field .500-.371 percent.  
 
The Golden Eagles also dominated turnovers 21-14. They outscored the Gators 30-15 on points off turnovers and 24-12 on fast break points. Cofield had five of CSLA's 14 steals steals, as did his teammate Shane Bell.
 
At the half, SF State trailed 39-33, and it cut the deficit to three (42-39) with 17:34 to play. Cal State's defense then took over. It forced four turnovers in the next six minutes to fuel a 23-6 run, pushing the lead to 20 (65-45).
 
SF State got it down to 13 (68-55) with eight minutes remaining, but Okeke and Cofield combined to score the following eight points to push the lead back over 20 (77-55).
 
Bell joined Okeke and Cofield in double-figures with 15 points. A'Jahni Levias added 11 points.
 
John Bakke and Tyjean Burrell led SF State with 13 points apiece. Jailen Daniel-Dalton scored 12 points and tied with Jonah Roth with a game-high nine rebounds. Roth also scored 11 points.
 
Cal State LA will advance to the semifinals of the CCAA Men's Basketball Championship, where it will face the No. 2 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 p.m.
