Cal State Dominguez Hills'
Jeremy Dent-Smith was voted the 2023-24 CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year, and the Toros'
Steve Becker was named the CCAA Coach of the Year, highlighting this season's all-conference honors.
The Toros collected another special honor as
Jakob Alamudum collected Newcomer of the Year. Cal State San Bernardino's
LeAndrew Knight earned Defensive Player of the Year, and Cal Poly Humboldt's
Rob Diaz was named Freshman of the Year.
Jeremy Dent-Smith becomes the first Toro since 1988-89, and just the third in program history, to be named CCAA Player of the Year. The sophomore guard ranked second in the conference in scoring (16.9 ppg) and 3-pointers per game (1.96) while finishing fifth in the CCAA with a .462 field goal percentage. He reached double-figures in 23 of 27 games and was named the D2CIDA Men's Basketball Div. II Player of the Week after scoring a CCAA season-best 41 points, including nine 3-pointers, in a win over Cal Poly Pomona. The Hawthorne, Calif., native added 1.43 steals per game (10th CCAA) and ranked fifth in free throw percentage (.794) and fourth in attempts (126).
LeAndrew Knight was the best defender on the best defensive team in the CCAA. Knight spearheaded a relentless Coyotes' defense that allowed just 65.2 points per game (12th NCAA) and outrebounded its opponents by 9.2 boards per game (fourth NCAA). The senior guard from Lompoc, Calif., ranked fifth in the CCAA in steals (1.54) and ninth in rebounding (6.4). He added 10.4 ppg on .583 percent shooting.
Jakob Alamudum joined the Toros out of Lehigh University and was instrumental in the team's championship season. The 6-6 guard ranked fifth in scoring (15.1 ppg) and led the conference with a .839 free throw percentage while taking (155) and making (130) the most in the league. Alamudun reached double-figures in 22 of 27 games, including six games with 20 or more. The Huntington Beach native added 5.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
In a league dominated by upperclassmen, Cal Poly Humboldt's
Rob Diaz stood out as a freshman. The Long Beach native paced the Lumberjacks with 12.5 points on a .454 percent shooting. He added 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. The 6-1 guard reached double-figures 19 times, including posting a career-high 24 points against Cal State Monterey Bay. Diaz also ranked sixth in the CCAA with 1.48 steals per game.
Steve Becker helped lead the Toros from a fifth-place preseason prediction to the program's first CCAA Championship since 2008-09. Cal State Dominguez Hills lost the season's first game before winning nine consecutive games to reach the top 25 national polls. In his 11th season at the helm, Becker led the Toros to a 10-2 record on the road, and the team ranked top 10 in the NCAA in field goal defense (.402).
Both Dent-Smith and Alamudun earned first-team All-CCAA along with their special recognition. Teammate
Andre Ball collected second-team honors to give Cal State Dominguez Hills three on the first and second teams. Cal State San Bernardino placed three on the first two teams. Chico State and Cal State LA led the way with four selections.
Cal State East Bay's
Grady Lewis was the only repeat first team selection. Cal State LA's
Shane Bell and
Eche Okeke along with CSUSB's
Robby Robinson moved up to the first team after collecting second team honors in 2022-23. Chico State's
Joshua Hamilton and
Dimitrios Klonaras went from the honorable mention list to first team honors during their senior seasons. The conference's 12 head coaches selected the 2023-24 All-CCAA Team.
The 2023-24 CCAA Basketball Tournament begins Thursday, Mar. 7, in San Bernardino. No. 3 seed Cal State LA will take on No. 6 seed San Francisco State in the first men's game of the day at 5:30 p.m. The 4/5 matchup will follow at 8 p.m. when Chico State faces Cal State East Bay.
