Upsets reigned supreme on Day One of the NCAA West Regional, hosted by Cal State LA. The lower-seed picked up wins in three of four games, including sixth-seed Chico State earning the win over Montana State Billings to set up a semifinal showdown with Cal State San Bernardino.
#6 Chico State 78, #3 MSU Billings 64 - Box Score
After an evenly played first half, the Wildcats came out firing in the second half, outscoring MSUB 10-2 to open the period. Once they held the lead, Chico State wasn't giving it up, holding on to open the West Regionals with a 78-64 upset win.
Chico State was led by 15 points and seven rebounds from
Miles Daniels.
Joshua Hamilton also finished with double-digit points, scoring 12 points while
Kelvin Wright Jr. brought down a team-high 13 rebounds.
#2 Cal State San Bernardino 52, #7 Alaska Anchorage 49 - Box Score
Overcoming a late upset bid, the second-seed Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes held on against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, earning a 52-49 win to advance to an All-CCAA Semifinal on Saturday night against Chico State.
Christopher Mitchell led the Coyotes with 16 points on the afternoon, adding 10 rebounds to collect the double-double.
Sedrick Altman added 12 points in the low-scoring contest. CSUSB won the game with 24 points in the paint but struggled from the perimiter, shooting just 1-for-14 from three-point range.
#8 Azusa Pacific 60, #1 Cal State LA 59 - Box Score
Azusa Pacific's Bryce Sloan made the go-ahead free throw with just two seconds left to lead the Cougars to a 60-59 upset over top-seed Cal State LA. The Golden Eagles didn't make it easy on the Cougars, storming back from 12 down at half but APU earned the final points to earn the upset win.
Corey Cofield scored 16 points to lead the Golden Eagles while
Shane Bell added 13 and
Eche Okeke chipped in 12 points. APU was led by 14 points from Ken West.
#5 Central Washington 110, Cal State Dominguez Hills 90 - Box Score
After allowing 61 points in the first half, Cal State Dominguez Hills just couldn't close the gap before the final buzzer, falling 110-90 to the Central Washington Wildcats in the final game of day one of the 2024 NCAA Division II West Regional.
CCAA Player of the Year
Jeremy Dent-Smith did all he could to keep the Toros in the game, finishing with 25 points.
Alex Garcia chipped in 15 points and
DJ Guest finished with 14 points.
Andre Ball and
Jakob Alamudun each added 13 points to round out the Toros in double-digit scoring.
