Cal Poly Pomona’s Kalaya Buggs earns her second CCAA Player of the Week award of 2023-24 Feb 20, 2024 By: Glory Smith, Athletic Leadership Development Intern Complete list of weekly winners >>> Kalaya Buggs of Cal Poly Pomona has been named the CCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 12- Feb. 18. Buggs posted a total of 50 points over the weekend against Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State. On Thursday against the Pioneers, she contributed 24 points and went 8 for 13 from the field, helping lead the Broncos to a win. On Saturday, Buggs added 26 points to the decisive win over the Gators, going 13 for 15 from the free throw line. These two wins allowed Cal Poly Pomona to clinch a spot in the CCAA tournament. The junior guard from Compton made 18 of her 21 free throws, posted nine rebounds, earned three steals, and had four assists on the weekend as well. She earned her sixth and seventh 20-plus point games out of her last eight played. Buggs is fourth in the CCAA for scoring (16.0), 20th in rebounding (5.4), 13th in field goal percentage (.410), and third in assists (4.0). She is also sixth in free throw percentage (.801), 24th in 3-point field goals per game (1.2), seventh in assist/turnover ratio (1.3), seventh in steals (2.1), and eighth in minutes (32.4).
