POMONA, Calif. – San Francisco State upset top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona in three sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) to claim the 2024 NCAA Volleyball West Region Championship.
Izzy Issak registered a double-double in just three sets with 14 kills and 13 digs. She added two aces and three blocks.
Aidan Goodrich also reached double-figures with 10 kills and a .258 hitting percentage.
Kimberly DeBoer had 30 assists, and her sister
Brianna DeBoer made 23 digs.
The Gators came ready to play from the opening serve, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and never trailing en route to a 25-16 first-set win. They outhit the Broncos .306 to .063.
SF State also led wire-to-wire in the second set. Behind
Tamiya Wilson's serve, the Gators scored the first six points of the set and never let CPP get closer than two. Cal Poly Pomona cut its deficit to 21-19, but SFSU answered with a set-clinching 4-2 run.
The teams traded points throughout the first half of the third set until a timely 5-1 run put the Gators up 20-15. The Broncos would cut the lead to two at 22-20 on a kill by
Samantha Campion. They would trade points until SF State clinched the set and the match.
San Francisco State finished almost 100, hitting points better than Cal Poly Pomona (.184 to .086) and held the Broncos below .125 in all three sets, including under .063 in the first two.
Sarah Ybarra's nine kills paced Cal Poly Pomona.
Avery Percival added 16 digs, and
Alexia Athans had five blocks.
San Francisco State entered the regional without an NCAA postseason win in program history. It has won three consecutive matches to claim the NCAA West Regional Championship and a spot at next week's NCAA Championships. SFSU will be one of eight teams at the final site in Sioux Falls, S.D. The matches will begin on Thursday, Dec. 12.
