WICHITA FALLS, Texas -
Sam Lena assisted on both Bronco goals, including
Mads Frederiksen's game-winner in the 83rd minute to help lead the No. 7 seed Cal Poly Pomona to a 2-1 win over No. 10 seed Westmont in the NCAA Super-Region 4.
Cal Poly Pomona took the lead just 79 seconds into the match when Lena sent a ball across the 18-yard bax and connected with
Mike Moser, who finished it with his left foot.
Connor Lynch would deliver the equalizer for Westmont in the 21st minute, and the match would stay tied until late in the second half.
It was another run by Lena that would spark the second Broncos' goal. In the 83rd minute, Lena dribbled the ball from near midfield down the left side and drew the attention of three defenders. This created a 2v2 situation in the box. Lena's pass split those two defenders, finding Fredriksen with space on the right side. He wasted no time and volleyed it over the diving keeper for this fifth goal of the season.
Luke Garciduenas made four saves for CPP, and
Mario Floriano made five for Westmont.
Cal Poly Pomona will advance to the next round, where it will face No. 2 seed Midwestern State on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m. PST.
