HAYWARD, Calif. – No. 2 seed Cal Poly Pomona scored three first-half goals, then held off a determined Cal State East Bay team to win 3-2 and earn a spot in the championship match of the 2024 CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament presented by FloCollege.

The Broncos jumped out to the early lead in the eighth minute on Sam Lena's first goal of the season. Jasper Winslow extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 26th minute. Mads Frederiksen assisted on both goals. Jakob Singh got in on the scoring action in the 37th minute when Lena found him for a goal.

The sixth-seeded Pioneers went into halftime trailing 3-0, but they came out in the second half with an extra step. They cut the deficit to two on Julian Valle's goal in the 65th minute. He added another in the 74th minute to get CSUEB within one (3-2) with 16 minutes remaining.

Cal State East Bay's best opportunity for the equalizer came in the 85th minute. After a CSUEB corner kick, the ball bounced around the box before Drew Gibbons gained possession at the top of the 18-yard box.

Gibbons had a good look at the goal, and he took the shot. When it came off his foot, it looked destined to find the net, but the arm of the Broncos' goalkeeper, Luke Garciduenas, rose out of the scrum at the last moment and punched the ball over the goal.

The Pioneers would get one more shot at the equalizer at the last minute, but Garciduenas again came through with the save to preserve the win. He finished the game with four saves. His counterpart, Adan Corona, also had four saves.

Cal Poly Pomona will advance to the championship match of the CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament presented by FloCollege on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m.
