Cal State LA’s Dominic Escobar repeats as CCAA Player of the Week Jan 9, 2024 Share: Complete list of weekly winners >>> Cal State LA’s Dominic Escobar was named the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. (Jan. 1-7) Escobar continued his sensational shooting streak since returning from the holiday break. The junior guard averaged 19.0 points per game on 15-of-19 (.789 percent) shooting, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. He started the week with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He went 4-of-7 from behind the arc while adding two assists, three steals, and four rebounds in a 79-55 win over Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State LA then collected a home 95-85 win over No. 16 Cal State San Bernardino for its first victory over the Coyotes since Feb. 2020. Escobar scored 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were allowing only 61 points per game, but with Escobar’s efforts, the Golden Eagles matched their season-high with 95 points. He added three assists and two blocks in the victory over the top 25 team. The Coachella Valley native ranks fourth in the CCAA in field goal percentage (.554) and second in steals (2.08). His efforts have Cal State LA leading the conference in scoring (80.4 ppg) and 3-point percentage (.373). Escobar is the first student-athlete this season to earn CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks in 2023-24. Cal State LA has won four of the eight CCAA Player of the Week honors this season after starting the year at 11-2 (6-1 CCAA). Both Escobar and Shane Bell have two. The 11 wins also match their total for all of 2022-23. The Golden Eagles will face Cal State East Bay for sole possession of first place this Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Both teams come into the game tied at 6-1.
