Daniel Echeveste of Cal Poly Pomona has earned the honor as the CCAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week to start the 2023 season.

Despite running in a small field at the Seawolf Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, Echeveste led the No. 22 Broncos to a team victory ahead of Fresno Pacific, Ventura College and Cal State LA.

Echeveste finished second behind only FPU’s Bryan Banuelos, a 2023 NCAA Championship qualifier. In the 4-mile race (which is about 6,400 meters), Echeveste, a junior from Pomona, clocked in at 20:02.1, less than two seconds behind the winner. His average mile time of 5:00.6 was the best among all CCAA runners during the opening weekend.

Cal Poly Pomona placed four runners in the top five to win the team title. The Broncos will take a week off from competition before taking part at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 16.
